CALACS Région Côte-Nord is community and feminist organization offering help to women of 14 years and over who have experienced sexual assault. By its actions, it aims to create social and political changes. In order to do this, it works in parallel and jointly in three areas: direct aid, prevention and consciousness-raising, defense of rights and advocacy. For example, by its workshops in support groups or during representations, the centre aims to demystify the myths and prejudices conveyed by society concerning the stereotypes in regard to women and victims of sexual assault. Our analysis of sexual assault is a feminist one; it impregnates our work, that is our practices and interventions. During counselling, the economic, political and social aspects of the problem are presented while taking into account the possibility for each woman to receive such information. It is by making them aware of the external causes of the climate of violence that women can realize the connection between the position of potential victim and the integration of the female stereotypes conveyed by our society. The counsellors at CALACS help the victims of sexual assault to understand what happened, express what they went through, not feel guilty for the assault and to take power over their lives so they can become the women they want to be. Counselling tends to reduce the feelings of shame, powerlessness, anger and despair that are the lot of many women.
