Baie-Comeau

Territory

The services of CALACS Région Côte-Nord are offered from Tadoussac (Upper North Shore) to Blanc-Sablon (Lower North Shore) including the northern towns and Anticosti Island. It covers a distance of  1200 kilometers along the northern coast of the St Lawrence River.

The population of approximately 95 900 people is scattered among small isolated villages and three main cities : Port-Cartier, Sept-Îles and Baie-Comeau. We also serve the northern towns and the aboriginal communities. There is no road east of Natashquan connecting it to Blanc Sablon. People and goods are transported by plane, boat or snowmobile according to the season. A single road goes north and is seldomly used during the winter. This absence of road transportation makes the social isolation even more difficult.

The North Shore is the second region of Quebec, after Abitibi-Témiscamingue, in terms of the highest rate of sexual crimes. In 2007, the North Shore had the highest rate for this type of crime while the average for the province of Quebec is 67 offences for 100 000 people [1] compared to 130 offences for 100 000 people on the North Shore.
