A Milestone Achievement: The Autonomy of the Pessamit Service Point
Together, today and tomorrow, for and with women.
It is with immense pride, deep emotion, and a profound sense of happiness that we celebrate the autonomy of the Pessamit team, which emerged from the Pessamit Service Point established through the Pessamit Project of Lumière boréale * CALACS Baie-Comeau (Northern light * CALACS Baie-Comeau).
Made possible through financial support from the Secrétariat à la condition féminine of the Government of Quebec, this project, implemented from 2022 to 2026, helped build, strengthen, and promote essential services by and for the women of Pessamit, while respecting Innu cultural, community, and territorial realities.
Today, we celebrate a hopeful transition: as of July 1, 2026, the service point has officially become Mamu Ishkueut, which means “Women Together” in Innu-aimun. This name beautifully reflects the solidarity, collective strength, and self-determination that define this new chapter.
This autonomy is the result of patient, dedicated, and deeply committed work. It demonstrates the ability of women to organize, support one another, and create safe, caring spaces that foster lasting change.
Although our organizational structures are evolving, our connection remains strong. We continue to work together, united by a shared purpose: the well-being, dignity, and safety of all women.
We salute the Pessamit team with respect and admiration for all they have accomplished, and we are delighted to see Mamu Ishkueut continue its mission, firmly rooted in the community and looking toward the future.
